The Dirty Habit is a traditional English pub with a history that can be traced as far back as William the Conqueror. For many hundreds of years,
this junction of Upper Street would have lain on the ancient track commonly known as the Pilgrims Way; following the murder of Thomas a Beckett in Canterbury Cathedral
in 1170, pilgrims made their way along this track on their long journey from Salisbury and Winchester to Canterbury. The pub's name was adopted in 1992 to reflect
these historic roots and is in keeping with the humour and character so well portrayed in Chaucer's Canterbury Tales. (Previous names included the Kings Head and
Pilgrim's Rest). The Dirty Habit is perfectly located for those walking the Pilgrims Way or North Downs Way who need a break!
The Grade 2 listed building is well preserved, with the many retained original features complemented by traditional, wooden furnishings and open fires.
Very food orientated, the menus are excellent, with varied main courses to suit all tastes, inspired by world cuisine. Everything is of the finest quality,
and freshly prepared to order, and should you have any room left there are some tantalising desserts. Your meal can be complemented by a fine glass of wine
or champagne, while the bar also stocks some excellent real ales. The Dirty Habit is owned and run by Samanjitr Oke, an accomplished chef, and they have
firmly secured the pub's superb reputation as a fine eating place.
